MEG’S STEP was released on June 18th, 2008. It’s her 5th album and debuted at #8 on the Oricon Weekly Charts, selling 15,801 copies in its first week.
The first new track is KITTENISH. This song is quite infectious, and catchy. MEG doesn’t sound weird when she sings like she did in MAGIC, so that’s a huge plus. I got addicted to this song the first time I listened to it, so usually songs like that are good in my book. I really like the beepy synth and the heavy beats. O:
Following a more mature and aggressive sound is MAKE LOVE. Ironic, right? I was kind of bored and annoyed with it because there isn’t really vocals, just talking… and MEG isn’t an expert. Very Engrishy. Since it’s Nakata, it’s aggressive. Think.
PRISM BOY follows a similar style as KITTENISH, with it’s beepy synth and the heavy beat. This one, however, sounds a little more robotic. I like the way MEG says “purisumu booooooy.”
SUPERSONIC is SUPERAGGRESSIVE. MEG actually sings in this one, so that’s a plus. She does talk in it too but it doesn’t sound as Engrishy as the previous aggressive, talking track. I guess you could classify this one as techno.
I was surprised when I first heard SEARCHLIGHT because there’s piano that’s in the song the whole time. This is one of the more mellower tracks, and one of the better ones. When it began I though it was going to be a space-sounding track. I’m glad to hear MEG not talking in it too.
Wooow. The original version of NATALIE is pretty cool. It’s the only track on the album that has no synth in it whatsoever. It has some piano and drums and the like. It kinda drags on but it’s still pleasant among all the techno and synth, even though it does seem out of place among this album.
The ynnk mix of KITTENISH sounded really weird. It took the original vocals and put it in a song that’s a different tone. It makes her sound like she’s singing off key. I think it has some electric guitar in it. It’s not good, btw.
All the extended mix of PRISM BOY is, is just added instrumental lines in the beginning and end. Nothing really special.
STEP was pretty good overall. It has it’s ups and downs, but for the most part it’s not all that bad. I think MEG has a lot of potential, if she maybe stepped her game up a few notches she could be great. Her biggest problems are her English, and sometimes the way she sings she sounds boring and dead. I think she would sound better, and possibly get more fans. But that’s just my thoughts.
Overall Grade:
